What Does Custom Stitched Mean? Pakistani Dress Guide

A custom stitched dress is tailored for you and arrives ready to wear. An unstitched dress arrives as the fabric pieces of the outfit, uncut and unsewn, so a tailor makes it up for you. Choose custom stitched if you want a ready-to-wear outfit and have limited time. Choose unstitched if you already have a trusted tailor or want to control every detail of the fit.

If you've looked at a Pakistani wedding dress online, you've seen the choice at checkout: Unstitched or Custom Stitched, followed by a row of sizes. This guide explains what each one means, what each costs you in time and effort, and how to decide.

What Does Unstitched Mean? (Unstitched Suit Meaning)

An unstitched suit comes as the finished fabric pieces of the outfit. The embroidery is done, but the garment hasn't been cut or sewn together. Usually that means the shirt or top, the bottom (trousers, sharara or gharara), and the dupatta, depending on the design.

You take the pieces to a tailor, who cuts and sews them to your measurements. This is the traditional way South Asian women have bought formal outfits for generations.

What Does Custom Stitched Mean?

A custom stitched dress has been tailored for you before it ships. It arrives sewn and ready to wear, so you don't need a tailor to make it up. You choose your size when you order.

Custom stitched vs ready made: Ready made outfits come in fixed sizes and are stitched in advance. A custom stitched outfit is sewn for your order.

Should I Buy Unstitched or Stitched?

Choose custom stitched if:

  • You're ordering from the USA, UK, Canada or Europe and don't have a tailor who knows South Asian formalwear.
  • The event is close and you want one less step.
  • You're a guest and a good fit in your usual size is enough.

Choose unstitched if:

  • You already have a tailor you trust.
  • You want to change the neckline, sleeves or length yourself.
  • You'd like to try the outfit on mid-way and adjust the fit.

A simple rule: if you're unsure, pick custom stitched. It removes the hardest part of buying a formal outfit online, which is finding someone to sew heavy embroidery well.

How to Get an Unstitched Suit Stitched

If you choose unstitched, here is how the process works:

  1. Find a tailor who has stitched heavy embroidery before. Ask to see photos of similar work.
  2. Bring your measurements and a reference. Share bust, waist, hips, shoulder, sleeve length, shirt length and inseam, plus a photo of the style you want.
  3. Check the fit at a fitting. Ask for at least one trial before the final stitching, especially for a wedding outfit.
  4. Allow time. Add the tailor's turnaround to the delivery time, and count back from your event date.

How to Order a Custom Stitched Dress Without Fit Problems

  1. Measure yourself. Use a soft tape and record bust, waist, hips, shoulder width, sleeve length, shirt length and, if the outfit has trousers, inseam. Wear the underlayers you'll wear on the day.
  2. Compare with the size chart. Check our Pakistani dress size chart for US, UK and EU sizes and our guide on what size to order in UK and US sizing.
  3. Choose the larger size if you're between two.
  4. Confirm your event date before ordering. Allow for delivery time, as covered below.
  5. Keep your measurements and order number in case you need to contact us.

How Long Does Delivery Take?

Our shipping policy says delivery is within 15 to 20 working days after you place your order, and that orders with more than one item can take longer, sometimes one to two months. Shipping is free and tracked through DHL or Skynet.

Custom Stitched Dress USA: Will I Pay Customs Duties?

If you're ordering a custom stitched dress to the USA, you may. Our shipping policy notes that since August 29, 2025, the $800 de minimis exemption no longer applies, so shipments entering the USA incur duties and taxes collected by DHL. Check the current rate before you order so there are no surprises at delivery..

Can I Return or Alter a Custom Stitched Dress?

Made-to-measure clothing has stricter terms than ready-made items, so read our full exchange and return policy before you order. The main points are:

  • Cancellations: You can cancel within 24 hours of placing your order for a full refund. After that, stitching and customizing are already underway.
  • Reporting a problem: Contact us within 48 hours of receiving your order if it arrives damaged, has a defect or is the wrong item.
  • If we made an error: We offer a replacement if one is available, or a refund if it can't be replaced.
  • Custom stitched items: Refunds on standard or custom stitched items are made after the stitching cost is deducted. The policy also says returns may not apply for major stitching customisation or plus sizes.
  • Sending a return back: The buyer pays return postage. Once we give you the return address, you must ship the item and share a valid tracking number within 24 hours, or the return won't be accepted. The item should be in its original condition.

Our terms and conditions also apply to every order. Since fit matters most with made-to-measure clothing, take your time over your measurements before you order.

Common Mistakes When Choosing

  • Ordering unstitched without a tailor. You'll lose time searching for one while the date gets closer.
  • Guessing your size. Measure and check the chart instead.
  • Ordering too late. Count the delivery window back from your event date.
  • Ignoring underlayers. Heavy embroidery sits differently over different layers, so measure the way you'll dress.
  • Forgetting the dupatta and trousers. Check what each outfit includes before you order.
